Max Irons is the finely chiseled face of Macy’s affordable new INC line for men. Good looks and acting talent run in the family; he’s the son of the actor Jeremy Irons. Max will soon be jetting off to Louisiana to begin filming “The Host.” To prepare for his role, he is hitting the gym daily, sticking to his skincare regimen and to his dismay, trying to kick carbohydrates. I recently had tea with him at the London NYC hotel in midtown.
T.T.: The spring men’s collection for Macy’s INC seems cool, wearable and very affordable. What do you like most about the clothes?
M.I.: Well, they are so comfortable. For me comfort is paramount. It all just feels like me. I don’t like shiny or stiff clothes; these are relaxed and have a lived-in feel and look.
T.T.: Do you like shopping?
M.I.: No, not really. I like going to one place, where you can find everything you need in one stop, like Macy’s!
T.T.: What is your everyday go-to outfit of choice?
M.I.: Black jeans, a button-down shirt and lace-up oxfords. I never wear sneakers. I don’t feel comfortable in them.
T.T.: Do you ever accessorize with jewelry?
M.I.: I’m not one for jewelry. But I’ve been considering a nice watch. My wish-list item would be a Cartier watch with the Roman numerals, a square face … preferably in rose gold.
T.T.: You’ve done some TV and theater in school. Where does the modeling fit in?
M.I.: I modeled while I was attending drama school at Guildhall, in London. I was pretty penniless at the time, so it really helped financially. Plus, I quite enjoy it.
T.T.: Now you’re about to star in your second movie, “The Host.” How are you getting in shape for your role?
M.I.: The most effective part of my workout has been interval runs. That is where you power-up the treadmill and run as fast as you can for about six to ten seconds. Then you slow down for about 24 seconds, still keeping your heart rate up. You do this for a total of 10–15 minutes, depending on how conditioned you are. If you do it with the proper form, you’ll get a great overall workout, strengthen your heart and burn some calories. It’s intense.
T.T.: Have you been watching your diet?
M.I.: Right now I am eating mostly protein and vegetables. It’s so hard giving up carbs. I love all of them — bread, pasta and especially pizza!
T.T.: How do you like spending your free time?
M.I.: I like reading, free diving and hiking. But my favorite thing to do is travel anywhere in Greece. I love everything about that place.
T.T.: Being on sets for photo shoots, TV and movies, have you picked up some skincare tips?
M.I.: Many makeup artists use Dermalogica products on me. My skin has improved tremendously. They have a whole shaving system, and it’s excellent. I use everything — the sunblock, toner and the lip balm, too. They have travel sizes of everything, which is really convenient.
T.T.: What razor works best for you?
M.I.: I really like the Gillette Mach 3. But I’m not able to grow a full beard yet. I am looking forward to that day!
T.T.: Do you have a favorite hair product that gives your hair that perfectly imperfect look?
M.I.: It’s a classic, and has been around for a long time — Dax Wax Wave and Groom, in the red can. You can buy it at the drugstore for about $5. It’s matte, and you can do anything with your hair using it. And now they make a washable formula.
T.T.: In some of the campaign photos it looks like you’re wearing a touch of eyeliner. It’s not the case, but would you be opposed?
M.I.: No, not at all. Some of the coolest men have worn it — Keith Richards and Robert Downey Jr. Eyeliner should be more accepted on men.
T.T.: Do you enjoy wearing cologne on occasion?
M.I.: I do. I think scent is a special thing, a great accent. I really like Costume National fragrances for men. They are actually pretty unisex, not overly masculine. I use the one in the black bottle, Scent Intense and Homme, in the clear bottle.
T.T.: For some of the ladies reading this, can you tell me what appeals to you most in a woman?
M.I.: I appreciate a natural look, as opposed to too made up. Kindness and a generous spirit go a long way. And a sense of humor. It’s like medicine — very healing. A woman who isn’t preoccupied with superficial things, who knows what is real and important. Someone who is willing to slum it every now and then. But mainly, whatever makes her happy!
T.T.: Does your lady wear a particular fragrance?
M.I.: Yes, she wears Tom Ford’s fragrances. They make us both very happy.
