Your Ultimate Vintage Watch Buying Tip Condition

Take, for example, the rare Rolex 6062's that you see above.  One of them was completely original and in immaculate condition, having lived in a sock for 60 years (we showed you a photo essay of it here), and the other is a polished down example with a rough dial.  These watch are identical when looking at them from 30,000 feet.  They are both reference 6062's in yellow gold with star dials.  They are from the same year (1952) and they are only 16 serial numbers apart from each other! They were both sold within the last two weeks at public auction in New York, so selling conditions were all but identical.  Yet, the watch at left with its polished case and dirty dial brought in $62,500 while the watch at right, according to many, the cleanest example of the 6062 to ever appear publicly, brought in a whopping $542,000.  Keep in mind - same watch, same case material, same movement, just very different condition.

The thing is coach outlet online, with vintage watches coach outlet online, the real collectors only want examples that are clean, crisp coach factory store, and above all else, original.  Sure, you may get to say you own a particular watch but is it an example you can be proud of and one that would be easily liquid should you try to sell it?  Collectors don't want the cheapest example of a particular reference, they want the best example in the best condition, and they are willing to pay for it. A 5508 Sub, for example, we could find for under $9000, and we could find for $20,000, no problem, and the one at the higher end would be the safer investment.

The 6062 at left was sold at Sotheby's on Dec 6, 2011 in NY and the 6062 was sold today coach factory store, Dec 16, 2011 at Christie's NY.

Of course, this is an extreme example of how much condition can matter, but the same goes for buying any vintage watch - Subs, Speedmasters, Autavias.  Think about the condition of what you are buying and how lust-worthy your example is and realize that a few extra bucks today could mean many extra bucks down the road, maybe even 480,000 extra bucks.

We are often asked to help people find vintage watches to buy. In most cases, we're happy to do it.  But one major misunderstanding among new collectors is that when you pay less for a particular reference, you're getting a better deal.  For example, on any given day cheap coach bags, we could probably find a 1970s Rolex Ref 5513 for around $4000.  We could also find a 1970s Rolex Ref 5513 for sale at around $6500.  Same reference coach bags outlet, same year, same everything - so why the difference, and why would the average person think the watch at $4000 is the better buy and why would we tell you to go for the watch at $6500?  Condition matters most, and in the long term, you'll see that.
