It is great to be in L.A. for the second Sunday of the month when they hold the Rose Bowl flea market. Luckily, my last few trips to the West Coast have coincided with the Rose Bowl Flea weekend and I have been able to shop all of the vintage goodness. This past weekend I knew Steven Alan was in town and I asked him if he would mind letting me tag along with him at the Rose Bowl. Being the nice guy that he is Steven agreed, so we got up early on Sunday morning, grabbed a couple giant duffel bags and headed to Pasadena.
Steven is a soft spoken, introspective and polite guy. He’s someone I very much admire for his great style and ability to make something as simple as a button down shirt interesting and cool. No one in menswear is as multidimensional and talented as Steven, which makes spending the morning shopping vintage with him an awesome experience for someone like me who is a big fan of his work.
Walking up and down the aisles we chatted about everything from Steven’s love of cameras (he owns several including a Rolleiflex, a Canon 5D Mark II, a Canon S90 and a host of other digital and film models) to hs upcoming trip to Japan and everything in between. We spoke about trends, what is emerging and what is coming next. We spoke about Americana and the joy of discovering a company that has been making something the same way for a long time and how great that is and how enjoyable it is to support that company. We spoke about heritage and where the world is heading on that front. (He gave ACL six more months of being relevant, I gave it one. Just kidding, we both know it has long been irrelevant.) Steven and I looked at vintage watches (which is something he has a lot of experience with) and what we thought was the next big vintage watch style.
While we didn’t find too many great things to buy (Steven picked up a few inspirational items), we did have a good conversation and saw a lot of cool folks a relaxing Sunday amongst the vintage. I think I can check that off things to do before I die, shop the Rose Bowl flea market with Steven Alan.
